Killer Yamuna Expressway claims two more lives

In a fresh incident, two persons died while two others were critically injured when a speeding canter hit a tractor trolley on Wednesday. The accident also led to massive jam on the stretch as loaded materials of the vehicles scattered on the carriageway and the police took few hours to resume normal traffic.

Notably, the high speed corridor, connecting Greater Noida to Agra, has claimed more than 15 lives within a month’s time and majority of the accidents have taken place due to poor visibility and lack of anti-fog measures.

According to the police, the incident took place at around 10 am, about five-kilometres before the zero point on Agra-Greater Noida carriageway when a canter, fully loaded with tomatoes, hit a tractor-trolley, loaded with bricks. The impact of the accident was so severe that a part of the canter was damaged completely while bricks and tomato crates scattered all over the stretch. The occupants of both the vehicles received multiple injuries and were admitted to ICU of Kailash Hospital in Greater Noida where two people, identified as Anand Patel and Sattan, succumbed to their injuries while the condition of the others was stated to be critical.

As materials from both the vehicles got scattered on the highway, it led a vehicle pile-up for almost a few kilometres. The rescue teams used cranes to remove debris to ensure vehicular movement.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the accident took place due to poor visibility on the expressway. “As morning visibility was very low, driver of the canter failed to notice the trolley and rammed in to it. Although traffic volume was low, it invited pile-up of vehicles,” said Suresh Chaudhary, a local resident.

Meanwhile, the accident also revealed ill-preparedness of authorities which are authorised to ensure upkeep and maintenance of 165-kilometre expressway. Like every year, there were assurances to arrange proper lighting to tackle fog.

Barring minor incidents, five major accidents have taken place and number of deaths has touched 15.
