“It was not just these five cases that used forged documents to conduct illegal kidney transplants, but there are around 50 other cases at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital,” said a highly placed source. The police are still searching for five primary suspects, who are currently evading arrest.
T Rajkumar Rao, the mastermind of the racket, who was once a kidney donor, admitted that around 10 kidneys were transplanted in the recent past. He told the police that his gang was operating from the
Apollo hospital for the past six months. Rao used to arrange 3-4 donors each month.
A highly-placed source privy to the investigation said: “There were around 50 cases of illegal kidney transplants that took place within the hospital. Teams are already working on the case files of the donors. As many as 800 kidney transplants take place at this particular branch. The SIT should be able to access the details of the recent transplants (from mid 2015 to now) and each case will be analysed.”
Another official claimed that the five recipients were still at large after the FIR was filed at the Sarita Vihar station. When the police teams raided the respective residences of the recipients, they were not available. Either the house was locked or they were not available. “They will be arrested in the near future as they are equally responsible in the crime,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police are likely to conduct face-to-face interrogations with all those arrested, including the mastermind, the tout, two secretaries of the senior nephrologist and the donors. Police are yet to recover the mobile phones of Rao, who is said to have disposed them of. The mobile phones had all the details regarding his various contacts.
According to sources, Rao confessed that he was able to start a kidney racket at Apollo with the assistance of several staff members. The staff included Aditya Singh (24) who was working as Sarin’s secretary for over four years, and Shailesh Saxena (31) who had three years’ employment under Sarin. He managed to get a clean chit from the Hospital Internal Authorisation Committee with the help of the duo.
Dipak Kar, a close aide of Rajkumar surrendered before the Kolkata Police, who failed to register a case against him. A Delhi Police team was sent to arrest him and bring him to the city. Kar also claimed that he is an active member in the kidney trade racket and knows all the secrets of Rajkumar.
