The six-year-long wait for the return of their child who had gone missing ended on a happy note for Mumtaz and Mehboob, parents of Sonu.

In 2010, their world crashing when Sonu, then six-years-old, was allegedly kidnapped by a woman who lived with him and his family in their two-room house in New Seemapuri area. Thursday brought life and zeal to the family and the entire F-block locality which had been anticipating the return of Sonu.

Millennium Post spoke to the mother of Sonu about how she felt. To which, a relaxed Mumtaz, smiling ear to ear said: “We all are excited. There is going to be celebrations. I have made Sonu’s favourite dishes. As far as I recall, Sonu’s favourite dishes were dal chawal (rice) and chicken. I woke up early morning to make preparations. Rest my sister and sister-in-law have stayed back at home to make sure that there is plenty of sweets and dishes prepared for the day.”

Hours later, the family left from the airport for the office of the Ministry of External Affairs. Sonu, along with his immediate family, reached the office at around 2 pm and met Sushma Swaraj.
Receiving calls from neighbours and the media, Mumtaz shared: “This is going to be a hectic day. Yet, the one day I will cherish all my life. All the credit goes to Jamaal bhai who made sincere efforts to reunite us with Sonu. Despite the hardships which he faced when he was sent to jail by that woman, he did not give up. For me and my husband, Jamaal came as an angel.” Sonu remembers his siblings. It has been six years. However, he has no memory of his friends. With time, the scars he suffered will heal, said Mumtaz.
