Khurshid’s NGO under scanner

There were demands of resignation of the union law minister Salman Khurshid made from various quarters on Wednesday, after a TV channel showed that he and his wife Louise Khurshid had allegedly siphoned off lakhs of rupees meant for the physically challenged people of Uttar Pradesh.

On Wednesday, physically challenged persons demonstrated in Delhi, Lucknow and Jhansi under the banner of the Rashtriya Viklang Party. In the national capital, they demonstrated outside the residence of the Congress president Sonia Gandhi, demanding justice. They threatened that if their demands are not met, they would march from Uttar Pradesh to Jantar Mantar in Delhi and immolate themselves.

The Khurshids issued a statement denying all allegations. They said it is painful and sad to see the entire work of their organisation being tarnished by the statements of a few individuals, the veracity of whose claims had not been established. They also said that last month, his wife had requested Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav for a detailed investigation into allegations that the trust had forged signatures of government officials to establish that its funds were being spent as intended.

Meanwhile, India Against Corruption [IAC] members said that several physically challenged persons had come to its office to discuss the issue with them. The IAC activist Arvind Kejriwal demanded the immediate resignation of Salman Khurshid from the government, registration of an FIR against him and his wife as well as an immediate arrest of the latter.

The IAC also said that it had decided to gherao the residence of Gandhi on 12 October along with the disabled persons to demand the resignation of Khurshid and arrest of his wife. It also said that if the matter was not investigated properly under the Samajwadi Party government in the state, there would be a suspicion that it and the Congress were hand in glove.
