The inquiry report into the midnight raid led by former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti against some Africans in Khirki Extension in January, has virtually given a clean chit to the Malviya Nagar police.
The report, which was submitted to Lt Governor Najeeb Jung, was forwarded on Friday to the state government’s Home and Law and Justice Department, sought comments from the heads of both bodies on the report within two days. The probe, which was conducted by retired additional district and session judge BL Garg, prima facie hasn’t found credence to the allegations made by former Delhi law minister.
The report indicated that the police acted as per law and the minister’s supporters created obstacles for the police in performing their duties. It also states that police had not recovered any kind of drugs from the houses of those African girls.
Lt Governor had ordered the probe into the incident, which took place last month. Bharti lead a group of locals on a midnight raid on some African residents of Khirki Extension in south Delhi. Bharti had allegedly gone to the locality where he claimed that a drug and prostitution ring was being run by some African nationals. Initially, he had demanded that police raid the place. However, when they refused, saying they had no warrant to do so, the mob chased down some African women present on the streets. Delhi police had registered a case in the matter on 19 January against unknown persons.
There were calls for the then AAP government to remove Bharti from office after one of the African women, who was allegedly assaulted in the raid, accused him of having led the group that barged into her house. But AAP had backed Bharti and said it would wait for the report of the judicial probe before taking any action.
