Khadi turns haute at IITF

To showcase the products of khadi and village industries, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is participating in the Indian International Trade Fair from 14 to 27 November at Pragati Maidan.

Carrying the theme of ‘Skilling India’, the stall was inaugurated by K H Muniyappa minister, Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises, Government of India in the presence of Devendra Kumar R Desai, chairman, Khadi and Village Industries Commission and Vivek Rae, secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

Around 160 stalls of artisans, craftsmen, institutions and PMEGP units from all over the country – from the Jammu & Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh – are participating in this trade fair.

Range of products include cane and bamboo from North East, munga & endi silk from Assam, handicrafts from Rajasthan, cotton, muslin khadi of Bengal, embroidered and readymade garments from Jammu & Kashmir, woollen shawls and other products like processed food, herbal and beauty products, wood carving, ayurvedic products, eco friendly handmade paper and conversion products, papier mache, fibre developed products, honey and honey products and tribal jewellery.

Designer readymade khadi dresses, silk sarees, dress material from other parts of the country will also be on display and sale.

KVIC has been given ‘export promotion council’ status by Ministry of Commerce for promoting exports of KVI products.

This will be a major step in creating export opportunities for KVI sector and to avail of professional expertise in the area of design and fashion technology, KVIC has developed linkage with NIFT, Mumbai, for convergence and an MOU has been signed. NIFT will also assist KVIC in setting up design cell, which would be used by khadi institutions to produce marketable products.
