Kerela minister inaugurates ESCI divisional office in Kozhikode

The inauguration of ESIC Divisional Office, Kozhikode (Kerala) was held on 8 September, 2012 by Kodikunnil Suresh, Minister of State for Labour & Employment, government of India.  M K Raghavan,  member of Parliament, Lok Sabha presided over the function.

With the increasing coverage and in order to provide speedy and hassle free service to the insured persons and Employers, Divisional Office at Kozhikode has been commissioned.  The Divisional Office will be catering  to the needs of Insured Persons and employers located in the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod & Wynad of Kerala.  The total number of Insured Persons and Employers in these districts are around 1 lakh and 5,604 respectively.  The divisional office, Kozikode comprises of 11 branch offices, 29 dispensaries and 2 ESI Hospitals run by state government.

For providing Super-speciality treatment to the insured persons, the Corporation has entered into tie up arrangements for providing cashless treatment with around 68 hospitals, out of which 18 are in the jurisdiction area of divisional office, Kozhikode. 

The ESI Scheme in Kerala was first implemented in September, 1956 and as on today, a total of 29 thousand factories and establishments involving 6.25 lakhs employees  are covered under the ESI Act.  The total number of beneficiaries in this state is about 25 lakhs. The employees of these units and their families are provided full medical care including super-speciality, besides various cash benefits. Kerala region is administratively set up of one regional office at Trichur, two sub regions, one at Ernakulum & Kollam and one divisional office at Kozhikode.  

The ESI Corporation directly runs  four ESIC Hospitals in the state at Parippally, Asramam (Kollam), Ezhukone (Kollam) and Udyogamandal (Earnakulam).  The ESIC Hospital at Asramam is a model and super speciality hospital.  Besides this, a huge network of state-run nine ESI hospitals and 138 ESI dispensaries are providing medical care in Kerala. 

The Employees’ State Insurance Act was promulgated in the year 1948 and ESI Scheme was launched on 24th February, 1952 at two industrial centers in the country, namely, Kanpur and Delhi.

The ESI Act applies to any premises / precincts where 10 or more persons are employed. The employees drawing wages up to Rs 15,000 - a month are entitled to health insurance cover and other benefits, under the ESI Act.  Keeping pace with the progress of industrialisation, the scheme today stands implemented at over 807 centers in 29 states and union territories.
