Addressing a well-attended rally of e-rickshaw drivers at the landmark protest site at Jantar Mantar, Kejriwal said the recent notification by the Union Road Transport and Highway Ministry to regularise e-rickshaws is fraught with ‘shortcomings’. He claimed that only a section of e-rickshaw drivers will benefit from the government’s recent move.
The ministry’s notification mandates fulfilment of four criteria — government approval for the vehicle, insurance, registration number and licence for the vehicle driver.
‘If every individual will go for testing and approval of his e-rickshaw, it will cost him Rs 5 lakh. How can somebody who has spent Rs 80 thousand to one lakh to buy the vehicle will shell out Rs five lakh for its testing,’ said Kejriwal.
He further added that he has no problem with the license clause but ‘education ceiling should be waived off as most of the e-rickshaw drivers are illiterate’.
Kejriwal also demanded that the Central government should call a meeting of all the e-rickshaw manufacturers within one week and ask them to submit one piece each of their models which can be tested.
‘If a particular model e-rickshaw is approved, then all the vehicles of the same model can be allowed to ply on the roads, said Kejriwal during his rally at Jantar Mantar.
