Kejriwal meets injured cop, demands better working condition for police

Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday met injured police constable Narender Singh at the Gangaram hopsital and asked Delhi’s Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung to make available best possible medical treatment for him.

The former Delhi chief minister also demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of slain police constable Jagveer Singh.

Jagveer was killed and Narender was seriously injured after miscreants opened fire at them at Outer Delhi’s Vijay Vihar area in the wee hours on Monday. The AAP leader also wrote a letter to Jung on the plight of policemen in national Capital and said unless the working conditions of Delhi Police are not improved, it will be difficult to transform it into a world class force.

‘Maximum working hours in a day should be fixed and strictly enforced for the police personnel. Many times constables have to work round the clock, and at times for full 24 hours. In stations where sanctioned strength is 150, there are only 100-odd personnel working. Though even the sanctioned strength in Delhi Police stations is inadequate keeping in mind the workload and proportion of population, but vacancies in sanctioned posts is rendering the work of police meaningless,’ the letter said.

Kejriwal said police personnel have to depend a lot on mobile phones for their work, but there is no provision for mobile bill allowance, and this must be immediately sanctioned.
