Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Friday that he will meet his Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda to discuss the issue of Munak Canal and increasing level of ammonia in Yamuna river owing to untreated industrial waste that was being released into the river through the Panipat drain in Haryana. The two chief ministers are likely to meet on 20 January.
Munak Canal was constructed by Haryana government with financial assistance of around Rs 400 crore from Delhi government in 2004-05 on the condition that the national capital will be supplied 80 MGD water from Haryana. But later, Haryana refused to supply the water to the city.
Haryana has opposed any water-sharing saying it has been generously providing water to its neighbour even though its own demand has gone up in recent years.
Kejriwal said that he will also raise the issue of industrial pollutants being dumped into the Yamuna river.
Delhiites will face water scarcity again over the next couple of days because of spike in industrial pollutants in Yamuna.
