India Against Corruption activists Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai were detained amid high drama by Delhi Police on Friday, while enroute to gherao Prime Minister’s residence, demanding removal of union law minister Salman Khurshid.
IAC said Kejriwal and other detained activists have decided not to leave the makeshift Jail at Bawana until Khurshid is removed from his post for alleged financial irregularities in his trust.
In a statement, it said that they would continue their dharna till the PM meets them or Khurshid resigns.
Kejriwal was leading the rally of physically-challenged persons and they were on the way marching towards PM residence when police arrested them.
After much drama for hours, they were sent to Bawana. After they were detained, the activists raised slogans and punctured the tyre of the bus in which Kejriwal and others were to be taken to Bawana. The march started from Janpath but was prevented by police after 100 metres at Rajpath crossing.
The march was organised by the Rashtriya Viklang Party and supported by IAC.
The IAC is demanding Khurshid’s resignation on the allegations that an NGO headed by him and run by his wife Louise Khurshid siphoned off money meant for the physically challenged persons in Uttar Pradesh. Khurshid has denied the charge and is contemplating legal action against Kejriwal.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister had refused to meet Kejriwal, who was accompanied by a group of physically challenged people from the Rashtriya Viklang Party.
The prime minister refused to meet Kejriwal, citing prior appointments. Kejriwal said that he had sought time from the Prime Minister but his office refused to give him and the disabled people an appointment.
Kejriwal said that he wanted to submit a letter to the PM detailing his allegations against Khurshid.
‘A police complaint should be filed immediately against Salman Khurshid and his wife. Khurshid should be removed from the cabinet till proven innocent. Both are influential people, they can tamper with evidence and pressure witnesses. They should be arrested,’ said Kejriwal.
‘Khurshid has insulted the office of Law Minister. B R Ambedkar was once in this seat. A case should be registered against Khurshid and his wife. Till he is declared innocent, he should be out of the Cabinet,’ he said adding, ‘Both Khurshid and his wife are very powerful people. They will be able to cleanse the evidence. They can put pressure on witnesses. They should be arrested to prevent this.’
Kejriwal said, ‘Now let’s make this place another Tahrir Square [centre of anti-regime protests in Egypt]. Now people should take leave and join the protest. Now it’s a fight to finish. Prime Minister will have to meet us and accept our demands. Mr. Khurshid has to resign. He should be arrested,’ he said.
