Kejriwal gives 1-week ultimatum to Jung, Centre

Addressing a well-attended party rally at the landmark protest site on Sunday afternoon, Kejriwal said if the demand was not met within a week, AAP will launch a door-to-door signature campaign against the government. In course of his address, the former CM repeatedly asked as to why BJP was running away from the elections.

‘We are giving a week’s time to the government. If they do not dissolve the assembly, we will launch door-to-door signature campaign and demand dissolution of the assembly so that fresh elections can be conducted.

The BJP is delaying it and this is helping the AAP. If elections are conducted now, AAP will get 40 seats, if it is conducted in October, we will get 50 and 55 in February,’ said Kejriwal. He alleged that Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung was following the instructions of the BJP government to not dissolve the assembly. ‘It seems that LG is trying to save his chair. If he does not listen to the BJP, he will lose his chair,’ added Kejriwal.

The AAP leadership was visibly enthused by the turnout of supporters who arrived at Jantar Mantar in large numbers at the party’s first rally held in the national capital after its rout in the Lok Sabha election. Targeting the BJP, Kejriwal said: ‘The BJP had approached 15 of our MLAs and offered them Rs 20 crore to join or support BJP to form the government in Delhi but all their efforts were foiled. All 15 MLAs are here with AAP.’ All the 27 AAP MLAs were present along with other leaders.

Kejriwal also raised a question on the High Court ban on the e-rickshaws and alleged that it was the failure of the BJP and Congress who could not make any policy for the e-rickshaws which forced the Delhi High court to take such a decision. The rally was addressed by national office bearers like Sanjay Singh, Manish Sisodia, Ashutosh and Gopal Rai among others who also addressed the rally.

However, the party’s prominent face Kumar Vishwas, who had contested against Rahul Gandhi from Amethi, was a notable absentee. Party sources later said he was out of India.

It turned out to be a morale booster for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at Jantar Mantar on Sunday after the recent drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections. It saw supporters turn out in huge numbers making it imperative that the party convenor and the former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had not lost his charm and charisma.

The humid weather failed to deter the crowds who descended on to Jantar Mantar in thousands.
Supporters jostled for space as the number kept increasing at the venue as the day progressed.

Many of the enthusiasts climbed walls, trees and parked vehicles to get a glimpse of Kejriwal, who was welcomed with loud cheers.

‘Kejriwal is an honest man. AAP should come to power in Delhi again but this time with full majority. He made a mistake by resigning from the government but they are still far better than the others,’ said Ankur Sharma, a student, who came from Dwarka to attend the rally.

‘It is clear that the BJP is scared to face the elections in Delhi. Why is BJP not thinking about Delhi? We want an elected government and hence polls should be held at the earliest. We should give AAP another chance because the BJP government is failing us at every front, be it power cuts, water crisis, or price rise’, he added.

The rally also saw visible support from auto drivers, who were the backbone of AAP’s campaign during the assembly elections in Delhi last year.

‘AAP government controlled corruption in Delhi. It was a lot better under its brief spell of rule. We worked freely without any fear of cops. But all that has changed now. We are still waiting for acche din,’ said Amit Kumar, an auto driver.Kejriwal addressed a separate rally for auto drivers on 31 July.
