It turned out to be a morale booster for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) at Jantar Mantar on Sunday after the recent drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections. It saw supporters turn out in huge numbers making it imperative that the party convenor and the former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had not lost his charm and charisma.Â
The humid weather failed to deter the crowds who descended on to Jantar Mantar in thousands.Â
Supporters jostled for space as the number kept increasing at the venue as the day progressed.Â
Many of the enthusiasts climbed walls, trees and parked vehicles to get a glimpse of Kejriwal, who was welcomed with loud cheers. Â
‘Kejriwal is an honest man. AAP should come to power in Delhi again but this time with full majority. He made a mistake by resigning from the government but they are still far better than the others,’ said Ankur Sharma, a student, who came from Dwarka to attend the rally.
‘It is clear that the BJP is scared to face the elections in Delhi. Why is BJP not thinking about Delhi? We want an elected government and hence polls should be held at the earliest. We should give AAP another chance because the BJP government is failing us at every front, be it power cuts, water crisis, or price rise’, he added.
The rally also saw visible support from auto drivers, who were the backbone of AAP’s campaign during the assembly elections in Delhi last year.Â
‘AAP government controlled corruption in Delhi. It was a lot better under its brief spell of rule. We worked freely without any fear of cops. But all that has changed now. We are still waiting for acche din,’ said Amit Kumar, an auto driver.Kejriwal addressed a separate rally for auto drivers on 31 July.
