Kaushambi residents bask in Kejriwal after-glow

On the eastern fringes of the megapolis, is a colony across the border — Kaushambi, made popular in recent times by its famous resident Arvind Kejriwal. The first colony in the NCR to have multi-storied apartments, many of them occupied by government and public sector officials, has lately been bustling with the media vehicles, often leading to inevitable traffic jams.

But nobody is complaining — Kejriwal’s win has got the almost dormant Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation working once again, including the deployment of JCB machines to dig out the long lying waste from the huge drains; also, a quick patchwork on the road has been carried out.

The good news about Kejriwal came in midst the of the battle that the residents have been fighting against the municipal authorities in the Allahabad High Court, which has incidentally upbraided the municipal commissioner.

Kejriwal had been staying there for over a decade, before moving to Delhi for a brief period when he became  the Chief Minister in December, 2013.

Considering his stint in the recent polls as the victory of a real crusader, Kaushambi Apartment Residents’ Welfare Association (KARWA), which also happens to be an apex body of about a dozen RWAs, says that the instinct to struggle against odds has made him emerge as the true leader of masses.

“I vividly recollect Arvind Kejriwal’s association with KARWA and Kaushambi and his contributions to this area. I was fortunate enough to work with him closely and during our association, he had once said to me that my children were settled in life and this was my time to pay the society back,” said Narayan Rajamani, a retired person from Godfrey Phillips. “I  extended his words to various senior citizens and urged them all to contribute in their own small ways and I think we’ve managed it well,” he added. “Another special recollection that I have of Arvindji is with respect to his efforts in improving communication, between KARWA and the residents. He was instrumental in setting up the internet group.

In 2008, he conceived and anchored a programme in a private news channel, which brought together administrators and citizens of various areas across Delhi and attempted to sort out their issues. More than 150 residents of Kaushambi were given a chance to be a part of this programme along with the Mayor of Ghaziabad and corporator of Kaushambi. Needless to say, subsequently, several demands of the residents were met. He also organised a dharna at the Nagar Nigam for sorting out unaddressed demands, aided by Manish Sisodia and Santosh Koli. What most of us admired in him during these dharnas was that, he was calm and unperturbed even when threatened with arrest. I believe all this was possible because of his practise of Vipasana,” Rajamani expressed.
