Delhi water Minister Kapil Mishra expressed deep sorrow at the unfortunate incident of two men drowning in a manhole in North-east Delhi’s Wazirabad.
Mishra initiated strong action against Delhi Jal Board staff for callous attitude towards manholes which were kept uncovered. On Wednesday, a young bird lover’s attempt to save a pigeon led to a tragic chain of events which resulted in the death of two men.
One of the victims, 19-year-old Anil Sahni, had gone to feed pigeons near a sewage pipe on Monday evening when he noticed a bird stuck in the sludgy water of the drain. While trying to hang from the open manhole to pick up the pigeon, Sahni fell into the pipe and got stuck in the sewage water, eyewitnesses said.
Mishra ordered immediate suspension of delinquent officials of the concerned area and asked DJB to conduct a manhole audit with report to be submitted within 15 days to the minister.
