He was referring to the arrests made by Delhi police on Sunday from Rajasthan and Shaheen Bagh area of Jamia Nagar in Delhi.
‘Delhi police has got into the habit of arresting innocent people. I have directed my son (lawyer Amit Sibal) to file a case against Delhi police on behalf of the youth who were arrested on Sunday and later released after protests by the people,’ said Sibal.
He is fighting a tough battle against Delhi BJP unit president Harsh Vardhan to retain his seat. On being pointed out that Delhi police was under union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde a Congress leader, Sibal said ‘Please understand that the Congress party or any of its leaders have no hand in the matter. It is the doing of a few over-zealous cops.’
Sibal went onto to say that ‘several innocent Muslim youths arrested in the name of terrorist acts get acquitted from the court. But before the court order comes they spend several years in jail. During the years they spend in jail, their family, business and jobs completely collapse.’
Sibal further rued the fact that there is no provision to provide financial help to compensate for the years lost behind bars. ‘If any youth is arrested for terror activity and is later acquitted or proved innocent, in that case, cops must be punished for wrong doings and the government must fix responsibility on defaulting police personnel,’ said Sibal.
Reacting to the statement, Delhi BJP vice-president Ashish Sood said it was amusing to find the Congress playing both the prosecutor and the victim.
