The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ body along with the academia and activists gathered a protest march against the recent police crackdown on the students of the Hyderabad Central University from Mandi House to the Rashtrapati Bhawan on Wednesday in the Capital.
The protest march was led by the JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar. Protestors gathered at the Mandi House and later marched to Rashtrapati Bhawan. The protest was participated by about hundred activists and students.
They demanded justice for Rohith Vemula, a student of HCU who allegedly faced caste discrimination on campus and had committed suicide which sparked an outrage across the country.
Kanhaiya during the march said: “We are fighting for the justice of Rohith Vemula and we are not going to stop our resistance till the culprits of his death are not punished.”
They protestors shouted slogans like “Lal Salam”, and “We want freedom” — a tagline slogan of the JNUSU president.
Meanwhile, a group of students were not allowed to meet Irom Sharmila who was in city in connection with hearing of a 2006 case of attempted suicide.Â
