Kanda may face charge of destroying evidence

Delhi Police is planning to slap a fresh charge of destruction of evidence against former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda, arrested in the suicide case of his former employee, and question an actress who worked with the deceased in his firm.

Special commissioner of police (law and order) Dharmendra Kumar said they will slap the charge of destruction of evidence against Kanda.

He said they were 'piecing together' the evidences collected in the case of suicide of Geetika Sharma, who was found dead in her Ashok Vihar residence on 5 August. Her suicide note alleged that Kanda and his aide Aruna Chaddha harassed her.

'We will also charge him for destruction of evidence. We have not charged him yet in this connection. We will do it,' he told reporters. Asked whether actress Nupur Mehta, who worked with Geetika in Kanda's casino in Goa, Kumar said, 'Everybody will be interrogated.'  He also said further investigations were on in connection with the deletion of the Facebook account of Geetika. Yesterday, police slapped sections of Information Technology Act against him for allegedly sending false electronic messages leading to harassment of the deceased.

Kanda had on Saturday morning surrendered before police after evading arrest for 10 days. Sharma, a former employee of his now defunct MDLR airline, accused him and another senior colleague Aruna Chaddha of harassing her.

WOMEN’S GROUPS TO DEMAND JUSTICE FOR GEETIKA

Various women's organisations on Thursday will hold a candlelight vigil at Delhi's Jantar Mantar for Geetika Sharma, former flight attendant who committed suicide on 5 August.

Geetika in her suicide notes had alleged harassment by former Haryana minister Gopal Goyal Kanda and senior executive Aruna Chaddha of his now-defunct MDLR Airlines. The women will march to seek fit punishment for the accused, a woman activist said.

'We want justice for Geetika Sharma. She was facing terrible harassment from Gopal Kanda, who has been making false statements ever since the case came to light. We want stiff punishment for Kanda,' said activist Sunita Kataria.

Kataria, municipal councillor and district head of Indian National Lok Dal, said: 'The candle march would be held by women's organisations, not under any political party's banner. Several NGOs will join the march at Jantar Mantar at 11 am on Thursday.'

Kanda, who is in police custody for seven days for questioning, was Sunday taken to the office of the defunct MDLR Airlines, which he owned. He was also taken to his home at Civil Lines here by police officials. Police searched his farmhouse on Monday.

Kanda was arrested on 18 August after he surrendered at Delhi's Ashok Vihar police station.

Kanda had been absconding since 8 August, after Geetika, 23, accused him and another official of MDLR Airlines, Aruna Chaddha, of harassing her and driving her to suicide. Chaddha is in judicial custody.
