IIT Madras partners with NZ university, expands global options

In a significant development, IIT Madras is collaborating with New Zealand’s University of Canterbury to strengthen international academic collaboration and create new global opportunities for students. Both institutions have signed an MoU on Monday, establishing a comprehensive framework for cooperation across degree programmes, online education, research, and academic exchange. This partnership marks a crucial step in IIT Madras’ global outreach strategy, particularly in creating scalable, flexible pathways for its large and growing student base.
“This partnership reflects IIT Madras’ commitment to creating meaningful global pathways for our students. By combining the strength of our BS programmes with University of Canterbury’s advanced postgraduate offerings, we are enabling learners to seamlessly transition into international education that upholds our core values of academic rigor and modular flexibility,” said Prof Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras.
According to Prof Michael Grimley, Dean, Future Learning and Development, University of Canterbury, the partnership marks an important step in deepening the engagement with India. “Together, we are creating flexible, globally connected learning opportunities that will benefit students, academics, and partners across both institutions,” he said.
Meanwhile, the MoU also facilitates student and faculty mobility between the two institutions and enables exchange programmes, joint research initiatives and co-teaching opportunities, besides academic engagement through conferences, seminars, and collaborative discussions. Further, both institutions will explore expanding online and hybrid learning models. This includes offering courses through digital platforms such as SWAYAM, NPTEL, and NPTEL+, thereby increasing access to high-quality education for learners across geographies.
