Juveniles attempt escape, bid foiled

They hid the gap cleverly with a carom board to make a move later during the wee hours of the day but failed to escape as an attendant working at the centre noticed the gap from outside and raised an alarm on Sunday evening.

In the past one year, more than 92 juveniles have managed to escape the juvenile observation home at Mukherjee Nagar, which houses around 140 juveniles currently.

‘They used a rod, which had probably come off the window frame, to break a portion of the wall and they must have done it in installments,’ said a source. He further added that by Sunday evening, the gap discovered on the wall by a staff member measured around one-and-a-half feet in diameter, which was hardly enough for boys of their age to escape.

The five juveniles involved in this case were all aged between 16 and 18 years and one of them had earlier made a failed attempt to escape in 2013. However, had it not been noticed by Sunday, the juveniles could have made the hole bigger in the next few days. They had cleverly hidden the gap with a carom board, which was provided to them by the authorities, the source added.

The matter was later reported to the Juvenile Justice Board, who will take necessary actions. In February 2014, over 40 inmates allegedly escaped from the observation home when the security staff were shifting two of them to another home located at Majnu Ka Tila in north Delhi, which is around 2.5 km from the Mukherjee Nagar home. In December 2013, as many as 19 juveniles allegedly escaped from the same observation home after an alleged eight-hour spree of vandalism and arson started by them. Some of them were injured and later taken to the hospital.
