Juvenile Justice Board defers verdict in 16 Dec rape case

The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) has deferred the announcement of judgment in the role of the minor in the 16 December gang rape case till 31 August in view of a petition by senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy seeking fresh interpretation of the term 'juvenile' in the statute pending before it. This is the fourth time, since 11 July, that the pronouncement of verdict has been deferred by the Board.

The Supreme Court had on 14 August reserved its order on the maintainability of a PIL filed by former MP Subramanian Swamy for a fresh interpretation of the term juvenile. Swamy, in his petition, has said that the mental and intellectual maturity should be considered instead of age limit of 18 years for such offenders while fixing their culpability.
