Inmates of a juvenile home in the Majnu Ka Tila area on Ring Road in north Delhi protested against the alleged misbehaviour of the home’s warden on Thursday. Violence was reported from the home, the same one where the juvenile accused in the 16 December Delhi gang rape case has been lodged.
According to residents of the near-by areas, angry inmates started protesting late on Wednesday night and continued the protest till noon on Thursday. Agitated inmates pelted stones at police officials and also set bed linens on fire.
'We were waiting outside the juvenile home, but we are not legally allowed to enter the building as it is under the department of women and child development, Delhi government,' said a police official who had been standing outside the building.
Inmates repeatedly scaled the walls of the building and threw stones at police officials and even at the fire tenders who had came to douse the flames in the rooms. The inmates accused the warden of not giving them food on time.
The trouble continued till noon and ended after the magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board assured that the problems would be looked into. According to the officials of Timarpur police station, 'The inmates demanded action against warden Ramesh Kumar and accused him of misbehaving with them.
They also demanded that they be shifted from this centre to the special home where approximately four juvenile inmates had been moved a few days ago.’ Residents of the area who witnessed the disturbance said that the minors also tried to tear down the fence around the home. One of the residents said, 'A few boys threw stones at us and broke the window panes of our houses.’
