A 16-year-old juvenile under-trial allegedly hanged himself from a ceiling fan inside a correctional home at North-west Delhi’s Mukherjee Nagar area on Tuesday evening. The juvenile was serving punishment for a rape case.
According to the police, the boy was charged of raping a woman in South-west Delhi’s Palam village due to which he was serving punishment. He was lodged in the correctional home on December 2015. The incident took place around 4 pm on Tuesday in the absence of other juveniles. After the caretaker got to know, she informed the authorities and a PCR call was made in this matter.
“The boy was depressed for the past few months. The correctional home’s caretaker went to his room to check on him when he found him hanging from the ceiling fan. While other juveniles were out engaged in recreational activities, he stayed back inside his room and took the extreme step,” said Vijay Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-west).
Police found no suicide note from his possession. However, a senior police official said that after the boy’s father died, his mother was the sole surviving member in the family.
Since she was physically handicapped, the juvenile was upset as to who will take care of her as he had no siblings who could take care of his mother.
Inquest Proceedings under Section 176 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (police inquiry into a suicidal death) have been initiated, said a senior police official.
Meanwhile, the Delhi government has also ordered a magisterial probe for the alleged suicide of the juvenile under-trial who committed suicide.
