Justice Lokur elevated to SC

Justice Madan Bhimarao Lokur has been elevated to the Supreme Court on Monday. He was sworn in by Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia.

With Justice Lokur’s elevation, the strength of the Supreme Court has gone up to 27. The sanctioned number is 31.

He will continue in office till 31 December 2018.

Justice Lokur had recently, as the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court, struck down the central government’s order on 4.5 per cent sub-quota for minorities in educational institutions and jobs. He had also recently suspended and ordered the prosecution of Special CBI Judge T Pattabhirama Rao in a corruption case relating to Karnataka’s controversial mining barons, the Reddy brothers.

The action followed complaints that the judge granted bail to Bellary mining magnate Gali Janardhana Reddy after pocketing a bribe.

Justice Lokur had earlier served as the Chief Justice of Guwahati High Court. He was elevated from the Delhi bar as an Additional Judge of Delhi High Court in February 1999. He continued to be at the Delhi High Court till his transfer to the Northeast in 24 June 2010.

Following a 18-month tenure there, Justice Lokur took oath as Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court on 15 November 2011.
