Justice delayed, but not denied

The hanging of Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the Pakistani terrorist caught for his 26/11 attack on Mumbai,  is justified as his act of terrorism led to a severe loss of lives and destruction.  As is known, Kasab had been sentenced to death for his acts of terrorism in India, with this country having suffered much at his hands and those of the other terrorists who accompanied him and attacked the city of Mumbai. This was one of the most gruesome terrorist attacks on Indian soil which fully deserved punishment. There has, however, been a long gap between his sentencing by the courts of law and his actual execution.  Though President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition this week, this rejection has come after a long delay for it has been many months since Kasab had been sentenced to death. The delay in his execution has been because of the inability of the government of India to decide on the issue of his mercy petition. The details of the incidents of that day are still not precisely known, though it has been probed several times by several government agencies and commissions, which reports have not been made fully public.  For example, the details contained in the Ram Pradhan committee report are still not completely known to the public with even this investigation being incomplete.

The government has not been able to track down the key people  behind the attacks. Many of the clues as to who backed Kasab lie in Pakistan, a country where some extremist elements regrettably sponser such acts of terror.  It is therefore time for the government to decide how best to tackle the issue of cross-border terrorism. Even though Kasab has been executed , finally bringing justice to those who died or lost their dear ones in the Mumbai terror attack, there are others such as Afzal Guru, accused in the 2001 Parliament attack, who are a daily reminder of the fact that justice is yet incomplete. Eliminating one or two terror accused may  send a message to the world that we as a country mean to take a strong stand on terrorism, but the menace can only be checked when neighbouring countries come forward to help each other secure peace and safety for their people.
