Jundal, pals planned Indian 9/11

The arrested Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant Abu Jundal has made startling revelations to the Delhi Police. He has told the police that his two Indian friends Fayaz Kagzi and Rahil Shaikh had planned to commit a 9/11 type of attack in India. They formed a team that includes seven Pakistan nationals, who were trained by these three friends.

During interrogation, he also revealed that along with him, the other nine militants were given training to fly aircrafts. He also said that Indian Mujahideen and Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) are controlled by the LeT.

According to the police sources, Jundal said that he, Kagzi and Shaikh had planned the 9/11-type attack on 28 July 2011, but somehow they could not carry out the operation. All three of them are natives of Maharashtra and have known each other for long. They, however, have shifted base now. Kagzi lives in Saudi Arabia and Shaikh is hiding in Karachi.

Sources told Millennium Post that in the next few days, the Saudi Arabian government is likely to deport Kagzi to India. He is a member of the LeT and is wanted in India in the Aurangabad arms haul case of 2006, in which the police had seized 43 kilogrammes of RDX, 16 AK 47 rifles, 50 grenades and 3,200 bullets. Kagzi is also wanted in the German Bakery blast case. 'Fayaz Kagzi used to give training in Colombo to youths who were encouraged to become terrorist,' said a source, quoting Jundal's disclosure.

Jundal became the commander of LeT in India, Nepal and Saudi Arabia, sources added.

Shaikh, on the other hand, is an accused in Mumbai blast case of July 2006. He is believed to have masterminded the blasts. The agencies are hunting for him across countries since then. 'Rahil Shaikh is in Karachi and is giving training to future terrorists in Pakistan. He is also an important member of the LeT. He is an Indian and is born and brought up in Maharastra. He knows several languages as well,' the source quoted Jundal.

The source said that these three friends were present in the Karachi control room of the LeT that supervised the Mumbai attacks.

The police had apprehended another Indian Mujahideen operative Aslam Kashmiri from Delhi in 2009, who recruited terrorists in Maharashtra and Gujarat. He is an accused in the Ahmedabad blast case. He recognised the voice of Jundal, on whose basis the security agencies proceeded.

It is learnt that the first police case against Jundal was registered in 2003 in Pakistan. During his sister's marriage in Pakistan, he picked a fight with someone stabbed him several times. The victim survived and Jundal was booked for attempt to murder.

After 26/11 attack, he got married to a Pakistan national, with whom he fathered a girl child. His family stays in Pakistan.

A round-the-clock three-tier security ring has been thrown around Special Cell office of Delhi Police where the prize catch in 26/11, Sayed Zabiuddin alias Abu Jundal of Lashker-e-Taiba, has been kept.

Paramilitary forces drawn from CRPF have been deployed to keep vigil at the office which has become virtually a hub of central security agency looking after internal security.

The tight security has been ensured keeping in view the importance of the arrested person who has been giving insight into 26/11 attack to the security agencies.

Around 50-60 armed security personnel are guarding the sensitive office located at Lodhi Road in south Delhi where the LeT operative is being held, a senior police official said.

The normally quiet office is abuzz with activities as Intelligence Bureau and NIA officials are engaged in questioning the 31-year-old Zabiuddin.

The media has been kept out the premises and are not allowed anywhere near the office. ‘This is a different case. We have to take extra precaution and we are taking that,’ an official said.

Investigators claimed that Jundal told them that he was recruited into LeT in 2005 by a person hailing from Kashmir. He was indoctrinated after the post-Godhra riots, police sources said.

Jundal has married a Pakistani woman who is the daughter of an LeT operative. His wife is now in Karachi, they claimed.
