Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said a judicial inquiry would unravel the truth behind the Jawahar Bagh incident, where clashes between the police and encroachers left 29 people dead.
Yadav had come here to meet the family members of slain SP Mukul Dwivedi. He met handed over a cheque of Rs 50 lakh, along with the appointment letter for the post of OSD, to the slain SP’s widow Archana Dwivedi. The Chief Minister also assured the family of all possible help.
After meeting the family, Yadav said a one-member commission would not only bring out the truth, “but those found guilty will get stringent punishment”. “I have ordered a judicial inquiry since I have full faith in it and I feel, the findings (of the inquiry) would be true and factual,” he said, when asked why was he not in favour of a CBI probe.
Asserting that his government was not “hiding” anything as its intentions were “clear”, he said the commission would take into account all facts and other related aspects of the incident.
Twenty-nine people, including City SP Mukul Dwivedi and Farah police station officer Santosh Yadav, were killed in clashes during a drive to evict illegal occupants of Jawahar Bagh in Mathura by activists, believed to be of Azad Bharat Vidhik Vaicharik on June 2.
The Chief Minister claimed that those living in Jawahar Bagh or over two years were “exploited” for their poverty. “There were people from Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh staying in Jawahar Bagh. Since they were provided with food and shelter there, they were never told that the land belonged to the government,” the Chief Minister said.
Expressing happiness that the High Court order of evacuating encroachers was implemented, he said the government’s intention of not harming women and children too was honoured. “The fleeing inmates of Jawahar Bagh were assaulted by residents of Mathura as they were not happy with their conduct,” he said.
On Dwivedi’s death, he said the officer had gone to Jawahar Bagh to conduct a recce and not during an operation when he was attacked by the encroachers.”The government has acted on intelligence report,” he said. The CM claimed that the scheme of providing assistance to families of policemen killed on duty was launched by his government.
Mathura violence: High court dismisses plea seeking CBI probe
The Allahabad high court on Monday dismissed a PIL, seeking a CBI enquiry into the recent Mathura violence that left 29 people dead. The Lucknow Bench of the court dismissed the PIL filed by BJP leader IP Singh. The petitioner’s counsel, Ashok Pandey, said a direction was sought to refer the case to the CBI or a Special Investigation Team (SIT). Appearing for the UP government, Additional Advocate General Bulbul Godiyal termed the PIL “politically motivated” as the petitioner was a political person and sought its dismissal.
