Leading steel maker Jindal Steel & Power Ltd on Thursday commissioned the steel melting shop and its allied unit of the 6 MTPA integrated steel plant at Angul in Odisha.
'Commissioning of the steel melting shop (SMS) is an important milestone in our project. With this landmark achievement, we are achieving 2.5 million tonne per annum (MTPA) steel production capacity in the first phase,' said Dinesh Kumar Saraogi, executive director (Projects) of JSPL's Angul Unit.
'The electric arc furnace of the SMS is of 250 tonnes capacity and is the largest in size in India and second in Asia,' Saraogi said in a statement.
Last year, the company had commissioned India's widest 5.0 meter wide plate mill under the steel Project.
The steel melting shop is of 2.5 million tonnes per annum capacity and has highest flexibility for raw materials, as it can use both Solid Hot feed, Solid Cold Feed and Hot Metal feed, a senior JSPL official said.
The hot DRI produced from the DRI plant will be directly fed into the electric arc furnace at 550 degree centigrade and it can maximise the use of Hot DRI to reduce power consumption.
It is equipped with latest feature like break-out prediction system (BOPS), electromagnetic mould level control (VUHZ), stopper control through electro servo actuator (VEMA). The technology for SMS has been proved by SMS - Siemag.
With commissioning of the SMS, JSPL is completing the 2.5 MTPA capacity out of the 6 MTPA in the first phase of its green field project at Angul.
'Our Angul Plant is of 2.5 million tonnes capacity now. We shall commission our balance 3.5 million tonne by the end of 2015. We will fulfill our commitment given to Odisha,' said V R Sharma, Deputy Managing Director and CEO (Steel), JSPL.
