Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) boycotted classes on Thursday demanding inquiry against a senior JNU faculty member from Centre for Studies in Regional Development who faces charges of sexual harassment made by a PhD student.
University sources say, JNU’s Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) indicted the faculty member after an inquiry in July 2013. The inquiry found the professor (now retired) guilty of molesting the PhD scholar and recommended severe action against. The panel also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the victim and suggested that the amount be deducted from the professor’s salary. However, neither was any action initiated nor was the professor made to pay the compensation. Surprisingly, JNU Executive Council (EC) in November 2013 said that it could not act because it had not read the verdict.
‘This sets a dangerous precedent as GSCASH verdict against a powerful and influential person has not been implemented,’ said Akbar Chawdhary, president-JNUSU.
