Many cases of theft of books have been reported from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) library and to put an end to this, the university administration has decided to install CCTV cameras inside the library premises and its periphery.
Speaking on the issue, Poonam Kudaisya, public relations officer, JNU, said: ‘The university has decided to ban unauthorised entry into the library also to stop book theft.’
Ravinder Singh, chief security officer, JNU, said, ‘After cases of theft of books from the library were reported, 50 cameras have been installed at different locations in the campus. This step has been taken to control the nuisance and also to monitor the staff security members.’
Some of the students who opposed installation of the cameras expressed displeasure by demonstrating in the administrative block. They said the move is a violation of their freedom within the campus.
‘The administration block of the campus has called a meeting to discuss removal of cameras in the library and other areas of the campus,’ sources said.
