JNU to go to polls on 26 September

Jawaharlal Nehru University election committee has decided that student union elections for 2012 will be held on 26 September. In the coming week, the committee will issue a notice regarding the information on elections to the various departments of the university.

The candidates have started preparations for the elections and ate organising debates on topics affecting students and life in campus.

The elections are conducted by the students themselves with no interference from the administration.

At a time when student elections at the university level are equated with money, muscle and violence on the campus, the JNU elections stand apart.

For the All India Student’s Association (AISA), the issues this time around are employment and corruption. A poster put up by AISA inside the campus says when the poor demand basics like house and food, the government brands him a leftist.

Probodhan Paul, the chief election officer of JNU, has informed that they will soon call a general body meet and issue an election notice by the end of month.

He added JNU students union must declare their candidates before 17 September because DU has already declared 14 September as the election date.

Sources said the administration is extra cautious this time with regard to the “legality of conducting elections’ on campus in view of the SC order and the Lyngdoh committee recommendations.

Sandeep Kumar, AISA President, said, ‘Unemployment and poverty are common issues in the country.’ Later, he said ‘hardships that Assam people are facing is also the main issue, and it also affected the NE students who are studying in Delhi, it is the matter of concern.’

ABVP, AISA, YFE (youth for equality) have started calling on students in campus while the NSUI have started it’s campaign by putting up posters on the walls.

The highlight of the elections, the presidential debate, is likely to be held in September, after which no campaigning will be allowed till the poll ends. Candidates for the post of vice-president, general secretary and joint secretary will address students and respond to their questions.
