JNU student arrested for raping classmate

According to the police, the incident took place in December 2015. But the victim filed a case last Thursday, after which the accused was arrested.

The victim, a foreign national, had approached the police and narrated the incident. A case was registered at the Vasant Kunj (North) police station under Section 376 of the IPC.

In her complaint, the victim has stated that she, along with some of her friends, had gone to party at a rented house in the Vasant Kunj area in December last year. She alleged that she was forced to consume alcohol at the party.

After the party ended, she slept in the room of the accused. When she woke up in the morning, she realised that she was raped. Both the complainant and the accused (names withheld on request of senior police officials) are pursuing post-graduation at the Centre for Historical Studies, JNU.

Though a case has been registered, the police are investigating it afresh – from all angles.
“This case is no different from others. We are not involving the university or any other body in the investigation. The complaint and the allegations framed by her are enough,” said a senior police officer at the Vasant Kunj police station.

According to JNU administration, the victim registered  a complaint with the university’s Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) immediately after the incident.
The GSCASH, an 11-member panel – constituting senior faculty members, student representatives and NGOs – has been investigating the case for the past four months, but has not bene able to reach a conclusion.

“We found the accused guilty of the rape. We submitted our report to the police on Friday,” said a member of the committee, requesting anonymity.

According to sources, after the victim approached the police station, the GSCASH hurriedly finalised a report on the incident and submitted it to the police.
