JNU organises poster competition against animal culling

JNU Animal Saviour Group organised a poster making competition on Tuesday against the recent order of declaring Nilgais, monkeys and wild boars as vermin and subsequently killing them. The theme of the competition was illegal culling of these animals as much research did not precede the hasteful order. It was initiated by the president of the group, Sukriti Chauhan with other office bearers.

The chief guest of the event, S C Garkoti, Rector, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), enlightened the audience about the importance of every species in the food web. Founder of the JNU Animal Saviour Group, Amita Singh was also present and talked about the importance of coming together and lending a voice for the voiceless animals. The order was also considered unethical as it assaults the philosophy of co-existence, which is fundamental to India’s nationhood.

The JNU-Animal Saviour Group comprising students, professors and Delhi University college students came together in large numbers to establish the declaration as meaningless. The competition was conducted as an initiative to address the declaration of the ‘Kill List’ which considered the aforementioned species as vermin.

The posters made by the participants conveyed the pain of helplessness felt by the innocent animals and the harsh treatment meted out towards them by humans. Cash prizes were distributed to the winners and the programme was concluded on the note of spreading the message of peace and co-existence of every species in the world.

The step came after the Supreme Court’s dismissal to stay the government’s notification on declaring Nilgai in Bihar, monkeys in Himachal Pradesh and wild boars in Uttarakhand as vermin. The Apex Court was hearing a petition filed by NGOs seeking a stay on the government’s decision.
