JNU, Jamia teachers join hands with DUTA

On the 17th consecutive day of protest on Friday, Delhi University Teachers’ Association announced another joint demonstration on 31 October, in which three constituent arms of the university (DUSU, DUTA and DUCKU) are expected to march together.

Teachers from Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim Unversity Teacher’s Association (AMUTA) and Jawaharlal Nehru University shared with dais Delhi University  office-bearers.

M Sultan Bhat, Jamia teachers association president read out from a resolution supporting the DUTA hunger strike. Anand Kumar and Kamal Mitra Chenoy, long-time activists and former presidents of JNUTA, pointed out that such united opposition to arbitrary policies that seek to destroy education in public-funded universities is the need of the hour.  Current president of JNUTA, D K Lobiyal, assured people that the Delhi University movement for academic democracy will spread to other universities and force the government to rethink its agenda on higher education.

Slogans were also raised against HRD minister Kapil Sibal, who was decried as a ‘paid advocate’ of American interests in higher education.

Arun Hooda, president of  Delhi University Students Union (DUSU), addressed the gathering and promised to intensify the struggle for the joint demands till the V-C is forced to mend his ‘autocratic’ ways.

DUCKU President Raj Pal pointed out that the DU V-C was guilty of taking a strident anti-labour stand by withdrawing the service benefits of the non-teaching employees, which had been in effect since 1998 and that he had a lot to answer for in letting 5,000 non-teaching jobs go on contract.
