The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) gave a mixed response to a call by the JNU students’ union in which the union urged to boycott classes demanding the Vice-Chancellor to revoke the suspension of eight students allegedly involved in anti-India sloganeering. Also the students’ body demanded the removal of the Registrar, Bupinder Zutshi for failing to handle the JNU row appropriately.
Since participation in the boycott was voluntary, many students who followed the appeal, escaped the classroom while a few attended the scheduled lectures.
“The call for boycotting classes will remain till the time all the eight students suspended by the university administration are not taken back,” Shehla Rashid Shohra vice-president of JNUSU said.
The JNU student bodies and teachers’ association have already shown its disagreement of the appointment of a three-member probe committee by the JNU V-C and registrar.
The JNU registrar is scheduled to retire in March but the students’ body is demanding his early departure. They have also raised concerns over the alleged harassment of the photocopier on the campus by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police. All these eight students remain suspended since the JNU administration had instituted a “disciplinary” inquiry as to how the event against hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru took place despite withdrawal of permission. The members of JNU students’ council were asked to appear before the probe panel for seeking “clarifications” regarding the February 9 incident.
