Activists, students and teachers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will on Monday lead a ‘mass delegation’ and submit a memorandum of demands to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
Sandeep Kumar, State Secretary of the All-India Students Association (AISA) said: “The memorandum of demands, including issues such as the violation of rights of students in the Hyderabad University (HU) and JNU, and caste-based discrimination on campuses, will be submitted to the commission.”
The JNUSU office-bearer added that many professors, journalists and activists will join the delegation. “Our demand will focus on attempts being made by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Central government to mute the voices of dissent on university campuses across the country,” Kumar said. “A petition for the removal of Appa Rao, vice-chancellor of HU, action against police brutality on HU campus and removal of all charges against students have also been included in our demand. In coming days, we will also try to meet the President of India to raise our concerns over the recent attacks on students,” he said.
