JMI forms ‘advisory board’ to help students with jobs

In a significant move, the Jamia Milia Islamia university has made a separate advisory board to help students with their placements.

The advisory group has launched  a ‘University-Industry’ linkage programme (UILP)  to enhance students skills and help them in getting a job.

‘Every year almost 2,000-3,000 students graduate from the university. But only few get placed. Last year, only 400 students got a job from university,’ said Mukesh Ranjan, media coordinator of the university.

The ULIP will enable students to interact with industry people. It will also look after periodic updating and fine tuning of curricula according to the professional standards.

The advisory board responsible for the programme, will  conduct workshop, seminars, cyber lectures and industrial visits for students. The board will also arrange special lectures by corporate leaders, among other relevant activites.

‘The board shall look into the functioning of the placement cell of the university and issue advisories and guidelines regarding the same’, said Ranjan.

The students of the university have welcomed that move. ‘We already had a placement cell, but most of the companies would hire students from technical background. For students of humanities, it is a great challenge to get a job,’ said a student of the varsity.

Rehan Khan Suri, head of university’s placement cell said the competitive corporate world has added more pressure on students. ‘There not much jobs available for students. All the companies look for best candidates. Hence, there is more pressure on students.’
