Jitin Prasad frontrunner for UPCC president's post

Ever since the Congress suffered a setback in the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, there has been talk of a new president taking over the state unit of the party. The Pradesh Congress Committee of Uttar Pradesh holds a significant position, for the party general secretary Rahul Gandhi's reputation is attached with the state. Of late, the leadership of the party has zeroed in on the names of Minister of State for Road and Transport Jitin Prasad and the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas R P N Singh.

One of the reasons that goes in favour of either one of them is that Gandhi wants a young leader to take charge of the state and start the process of building the organisation from at the grass roots. For this task, Gandhi prefers a younger face.

The other factor that works for both the ministers is that they have served in the Youth Congress and also belong to Gandhi's the inner circle. While Singh was the Youth Congress president of Uttar Pradesh, Prasad was the general secretary of the Youth Congress.

There is still no final decision on who would be the next state Congress president. However, what is interesting is that Prasad was called for a meeting with the Antony Review Committee on Sunday. The meeting went on for over an hour.

The Antony committee was formed by the Congress president Sonia Gandhi to analyse the cause of the drubbing the party got in four states in March.

The committee is headed by the defence minister A K Antony and includes Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit and power minister Sushil Kumar Shinde as other members.
