An Indian jewellery firm showcased three pairs of mammoth earrings, each weighing over 1kg and worth over 36 lakh rupees here in a bid to set a record, a media report said on Friday. Designed in the traditional Indian ‘jhumka’ style, the handcrafted 22-carat earrings were a tribute to the City of Gold, said G R Anand Ananthapadmanabhan, managing director of India-based GRT Jewellers.
“We wanted to impress Dubai with something special and big,” he told Khaleej Times. Looking like mini gold chandeliers, the mammoth earrings attracted a number of people, scrambling to get a glimpse of popular South Indian actress Nayantara, who unveiled the monumental pieces of jewellery at the firm’s Karama outlet.
While no customer is likely to dare hang the one-to-two- feet-long ornament on their earlobes — perhaps the largest gold earrings in the world, Ananthapadmanabhan said the firm is open to selling them as collectors’ pieces.
