Jaya is serious about Sangma as president

Stepping up her campaign for the former Lok Sabha speaker P A Sangma's candidature for presidency, the Tamil Nadu chief minister and AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa has contacted top leaders of several non-Congress parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party veteran L K Advani, seeking their support to the tribal leader.

On Sunday, Jayalalithaa spoke over telephone to Advani, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat, the Communist Party of India leader A B Bardhan, the Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu, the Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Shironmani Akali Dal leader and Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal.

As part of the 'intensified efforts' to garner support for Sangma, Jayalalithaa spoke to these leaders, seeking their support for the tribal leader from the Northeast who 'has all the qualifications' to become the president in the coming presidential polls, an AIADMK release said.

Jayalalithaa's latest initiative comes two days after she asked all parties to 'rise above political considerations', and support the tribal leader for the top job. In a coordinated move, Jayalalithaa and her Orissa counterpart Naveen Patnaik on 17 May announced their joint support to Sangma.

The AIADMK chief had held consultations with Patnaik besides within her party before announcing her support to Sangma, who had called on her on 15 May.

The Nationalist Congress Party, Sangma's parent party, however, has ruled out supporting his candidature, saying it would go with the United Progressive Alliance candidate.
