The 35-year-old Indian Army jawan, who had climbed up a 200-feet telecom tower outside the New Delhi railway station on Friday, was brought down by rescue workers after his health began to deteriorate on Tuesday morning.
K Muthu, who is part of the Engineers Regiment, climbed the tower near the Ajmeri Gate entrance to New Delhi Railway Station around 1pm on Friday and was brought down at 10.30 am on Tuesday.
Muthu had become very weak because he had not eaten anything since Friday and was admitted to Base hospital at the Delhi Cantonment. A senior Army official said Muthu is undergoing treatment and that his condition is stable.
‘It was raining heavily and he was very weak. He had not been eating. We told him that we were bringing him down. He was so weak that he couldn’t use the ladder to climb down and we had to use a harness to lower him down,’ the official said.
He added that departmental action will be initiated against Muthu only after he becomes physically fit. Muthu had been insisting that he won’t come down till he gets a chance to speak to Defence Minister A K Antony. The 35-year-old sepoy, hailing from the Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu, alleged that he had been transferred five times in five years. Colleagues from his unit were taking turns to be with him atop the tower and trying to convince him to climb down, but in vain.
On Friday, he had thrown down a bunch of papers from his perch atop the tower and in one of the letters, he demanded that he be discharged from service citing harassment by seniors as the reason for his demand. In the letter, he had also requested his commanding officer to get his last eight months’ salary cleared.
