Jamia’s photographic tribute to Husain on birthday

Artists, friends and photographers will pay a unique tribute to late master M F Husain on his 97th birth anniversary on Monday with an exhibition of photographs clicked by them that portray strong sense of personality and life.

Imaging A Legend, organised jointly by Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust [SAHMAT] and Jamia Millia Islamia, is curated by Niyatee Shinde and Fawzan Husain.

The exhibition at M F Husain Gallery at Jamia Millia Islamia will remain open till 24 September.

Those who have contributed their images include Raghu Rai, Atul Kasbekar, Farzana Contractor, Pablo Bartholomew, Atul Dodiya and Pritish Nandy.

According to the curators, Imaging the Legend is conceptualised to pay tribute to Husain’s legendary and celebrated presence on the Indian art scene.

‘Always nattily dressed, dramatically poised, in contemplative mood, whether reading a newspaper, or sketching for autograph hunters or merely sipping tea, that Husain presence pervades the scene is unquestionable and most of the portraits capture this. This exhibition is a tribute to his irreplaceable persona and includes his immense contribution to Indian art.’

The images are taken by photo-journalists on assignment, by artists and creative photographers, by admirers and friends, by fans and followers and by gallery owners and collectors.
