Jamia to hold cycle rally for water conservation

Jamia Millia Islamia university is organising a 12-day Cycle Rally. The concept was conceived by present Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung in 2009 and this rally would be the third in a row. Jung will address the participants of cycle rally in the lawns adjacent to the V-C’s office. This year the rally is being organised by NSS and NCC wings, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and Department of Youth Services and Sports.
A Jamia official said, ‘A group of 25 students (19 boys and 6 girls) of the university propose to travel from Narkanda, Himachal Pradesh to Delhi from 19-27 February 2013, spreading the message Save Water, Save Earth. The rally will be flagged off by Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Virbhadra Singh from Shimla on 20 February at 10 am.
The rally will reach Delhi on 27 February at 2 pm. Students will pass through several historical, cultural and religious landmarks and will visit local villages and interact with local university students on their journey towards Delhi. Starting from Narkanda on to Shimla, Solan, Chandigarh, Sirhind, Ambala and Panipat, the rally will reach Delhi after covering 452 km on 27 February.
‘On 27 February after the arrival, the university will organise a function to felicitate the participants at MA Ansari Auditorium. Since students are expected to cover an average of over 60-70 km every day in the course of this rally, it will be accompanied by 13 staff members, which will consist members of the University administration, back-up vehicles, spare cycles, a medical team provided by the university,’ added the official.
The objectives of the Rally are to generate an awareness about preservation of our environment, provide an opportunity to students to understand the flora and fauna of the different regions of India, expose the students to various challenges and thus develop the skills to overcome difficult situation in life.
