Jamia swamped with whopping 1.49L applicants

Jamia Millia Islamia university has received a record 1.49 lakh applications for 240 courses being offered by it in the upcoming academic session.
“The university received a record 1,49,148 applications for over 6,000 seats in the academic year 2015-16 registering a 25 per cent increase in the applications received last year,” Jamia spokesperson Mukesh Ranjan said in a statement on Wednesday.
While 33,077 applicants are female and 73,865 male, the varsity has also got two applications from transgenders.
The online registration process for admission had commenced on April 13 and was scheduled to end on May 1 but the deadline was later extended to May 4 in the wake of the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal and parts of India.
“These applications are for over 240 courses such as M Phil, postgraduate, undergraduate, diploma, certificate in 9 Faculties, 39 Departments, and several teaching and research centres,” Ranjan said.
“The largest numbers of applications — 39,654 — are for B.Tech courses followed by Diploma Engineering (10,633), Bachelor of Dental Surgery (6,603), BA LLB (Hons) (4,543) and Bachelor of Physiotherapy (1,199). Other regular courses in Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, Natural Sciences have also witnessed an upsurge in applications,” he added.
