Jamia student kills self after being asked to vacate hostel

A 28-year-old BDS student of Jamia Millia Islamia University committed suicide at her friend’s residence in South-east Delhi’s Jamia Nagar area on Tuesday night after being allegedly asked to vacate the hostel for not paying the hostel fee.

No suicide note has been recovered from her possession but her friends claim that she was depressed after she was asked to vacate her room from the hostel. However, Jamia administration rubbished the charges saying that so far they have not put defaulters name on the notice board.

The victim has been identified as Hina Peakar, who hailed from Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. According to sources, she had completed her BDS course from Jamia Millia Islamia University but she was pursuing a one-and-a half-month course related to her professional degree. “For the same, she wanted to extend her stay in the hostel. After the hostel authority approved her stay, she was unable to pay the hostel fees. So the administration department had asked her to vacate the hostel,” the source added. Since last week she was residing at her friend’s residence in Jamia Nagar. Gulzar Ahmad Jaidi, her friend, told police that due to this reason she was depressed and on Tuesday night, he found her hanging from the ceiling fan. When she was taken to the hospital by the police, she was declared dead. Meanwhile, her body was sent for the post-mortem.

The police official privy to investigation said that the exact reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained.

Denying Jaidi’s claim, Jamia authorities said Peakar had applied for leave on July 15 to visit her local guardian in Okhla whose name was already in the endorsement list. Official sources also said that there was no question of Peakar not being able to afford the fee installment July-December amounting to Rs 15,150, as she was getting almost the same amount as stipend every month.

However, the administration categorically denied that Peakar was asked to vacate her hostel because she was unable to pay the fee, arguing that the university had still not put out a notice for fee
payment. Meanwhile, cops are investigating the matter from all plausible angles.
