Jamia Millia gives Tharoor lesson in punctuality

Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor was given a lesson in punctuality by students and teachers of Jamia Millia Islamia on Monday. Tharoor was supposed to address the inaugural ceremony of the International Conference on ‘Contours of Media Governance: Teaching Disciplinary Methodology’ organised by the university at 5 pm onwards. Unable to attend the function due a meeting at the ministry, he tweeted, ‘Sorry to disappoint Jamia students but an important briefing has come up at MHRD which makes it impossible for me to speak as scheduled 2day.’

Tharoor expressed his displeasure as he tweeted after this, ‘We informed Jamia I could arrive by 6.20 pm rather than 5.30 pm but were told students would not be able to remain beyond 6 pm. Disappointing.’ When asked by Millennium Post on the social networking site, why students couldn’t remain after 6 pm, Tharoor replied on the site saying: ‘A good question for the students &authorities of Jamia!’ implicating that the university was responsible for this.

The event was organised by the Centre for Culture and Media Governance. It’s director Vishwajeet Das said they had been in constant touch with Tharoor on this issue and he was willing to come for the event but due to his engagement in the questionnaire session of parliament, he declined.

found out that even after 6 pm, students are present in Jamia campus. Shazia Parveen, student of MA English previous year, Faculty of Humanity and Languages, said, ‘We usually attend classes from 9:00am to 6:00pm. After that we spend at least some time at the reading room of the college library. On some occasions, we remain in the campus till 9:00 pm.’

Another student, Rahisuddin, who is perusing Diploma in TV Journalism from Jamia said: ‘We remain in the campus till 8 pm. Usually we spend time in the library, and it is not true that the campus get’s vacant by 6 pm. Rather students living in hostel stay on the campus till 2:00 am.’

The Centre for Culture, Media & Governance, Jamia Millia Islamia, has organised a three-day International Conference from 25-27 February, 2013, where Tharoor was not only the chief guest but was supposed to deliver inaugural address. Tharoor’s last tweet on the issue was this: ‘Apparently, Jamia students leave the premises by 6pm. They didn’t want me to address an empty hall. Or so I was told.’
