Jamia Hamdard punishes students for demanding clean drinking water

Jamia Hamdard University has cancelled the hostel allotment of four students at its Al-Burani hostel, allegedly for demanding cold and clean drinking water in the hostel.

Approximately 300 students of the University, from across departments, have been protesting against this move of the University’s.

Protesting students have alleged that many of those living in the Al-Burani hostel are suffering from diarrhea, hepatitis, and stone in bladder and kidney and dehydration because of the unclean drinking water in the hostel water cooler'.

Yasir (name changed), one of the students said, ‘For the past two months we have been forced to drink this impure water.  Cold and pure drinking water is a must in summer. We have repeatedly asked the authorities to provide proper drinking water to the students, but in vain'.

Another student, who wished anonymity, said, ‘Students of Al-Burani Hostel on Sunday had decided to go on a hunger strike to protest against the unavailability of pure drinking water at the hostel.  We also went to the University registrar for help, but he didn’t meet us. Rather, the dean, Faculty of Unani Medicine, suddenly appeared at the scene and started verbally abusing us. Fearing administrative wrath we ran out of there.’

The student added, ‘In the hurry to flee from the spot, some students broke some flower pots in the garden which angered the university administration'. After this, the University cancelled the hostel allotment of four students for their alleged involvement in the gherao at the residence of the registrar and damaging the property.

Students also showed a letter, duly signed by the University Provost and Proctor, assuring the students that two RO Kent will be installed on the first and second floor of the AL- Burani Hostel on 27 May but nothing has been done about it yet.

According to the University order, students scared and threatened other occupant present in the residence. Meanwhile, dean, Student Welfare S H Ansari said that all the demands of the students regarding pure water have been accepted and the situation has been shorted out.

'We are reviewing the notice of the cancellation of hostel allotment of the students,' he said.
