Jaitley initiates takes steps for quicker roll out of ‘braille notes’

Grappling with the menace of massive influx of fake Indian currency from the neighbouring countries and in an attempt to extend a gesture of ‘warm togetherness’, union finance minister Arun Jaitley has personally asked his officials to start working on the modalities to include ‘braille’ features in the currency notes for the convenience of the visually impaired persons in India.

The initiative taken by the union ministry is going to help more than 8 million people in India, who were find it difficult to identify the denominations of Indian currencies as well as the difference between the fake and the real one.

As per statistic India accounts for 20 per cent (approx) of the 39 million (approx) blind population across the globe. It was learnt that even with the existing features for the visually impaired people in the Indian currency, they sometimes finding it difficult to identify the denominations. Also, the fake Indian currencies too started having similar features, adding more difficulties before them in recognizing the notes.

Presently, each denomination varies from the other in terms of size. Greater the value the larger the note. There is an identification mark on the left hand side of each note on the front side which is in raised print technically known as ‘intaglio’ and has different shapes for different denominations.

‘There is be a diamond shape for Rs 1,000, circle for Rs 500, triangle for Rs 100, square for Rs 50, rectangle for Rs 20 and none for Rs 10. Also, the denomination numerals are prominently displayed in the central area of the notes in raised print. But despite this we have found that there were several grievances and demand for unique features for the betterment of the visually imparted people in the India,’ a finance ministry sources said.
