In a development, which could prove to be politically debilitating for Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, his one-time confidant DG Vanzara has put in his papers. A suspended IPS officer of Gujarat cadre of 1987 batch, Vanzara is facing trial in fake encounter cases. Forwarding his resignation on Tuesday, Vanzara put the blame on the chief minister and his close aide and former home minister Amit Shah for misusing the state’s police machinery. In a letter sent to the additional chief secretary of Gujarat government, Vanzara claimed Modi and Shah did not protect the state’s policemen. In his 10-page letter, Vanzara said he was shocked that the state government did not back him when his name appeared in the fake encounter cases.
Though Vanzara doesn’t level any direct charges against Modi and says the encounters were conducted in their ‘fight against Pakistan’, he blames the Gujarat government of not having appropriately protected their cause. Vanzara addressed chief minister Narendra Modi as his God, who has failed to rise to the occasion due to evil guidance of Amit Shah. He
claimed Amit Shah beguiled Modi to keep all police officers accused of involvement in fake encounter cases in jail to protect his interests.
Meanwhile, in a related development, the Congress on Tuesday demanded the resignation of the Gujarat chief minister till the investigation was over in the 2006 killing of a witness in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh case. Vanzara is named in Sohrabuddin case, Tulsiram Prajapati and Ishrat Jahan murder cases.
Tulsiram Prajapati was killed in an alleged staged shootout on 28 December 2006 in which then minister of state for home Amit Shah is the main accused. Prajapati was the only witness to the December 2005 police shootout in which Sohrabuddin Sheikh was killed. ‘How can he stay as chief minister when the investigation process is going on. The senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party, Narendra Modi, used his chair and intervened with the justice system,’ Congress general secretary Ajay Maken said. ‘There should be an inquiry into it and the CBI should inquire about it,’ Maken added.
The issue came to light after a petition was filed by a journalist on the basis of a sting operation. He alleged that attempts were made by BJP MPs Prakash Javadekar and Bhupendra Singh Yadav to impede the trial and other judicial proceedings by manipulating the complainant with the sole intent to protect Shah. The Congress also showed and distributed the CDs of the sting operation which caught Prakash Javadekar on record.
