Meena, one of the domestic helps of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Dhananjay Singh and spouse Jagriti, in her statement before the magistrate, has alleged that she was regularly beaten up by the MP’s wife, as the latter was suspicious of an illicit affair between the maid and her husband.
The police claimed that Dhananjay was troubled by his wife’s violent streak and was suspicious that she might harm their three-year-old son, while he was away visiting his constituency in Jaunpur. The MP has reportedly told the police that he was constantly in touch with his wife over phone apprehensive of the physical harm that his child might receive.
Dhananjay also told the police that he had refused to come to Delhi immediately after Jagriti informed him about Rakhi’s death on 4 November. Police said Dhananjay told his wife that she should handle the situation on her own because she was responsible for it. He said he came to Delhi only for his son’s well being as he feared his wife’s temper.
The police, however, is not buying Dhananjay’s argument about his wife’s psychiatric health. ‘Her medical report dated 23 October stated that she was medically fit to join Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital as a senior resident doctor. Jagriti had completed her degree course from Santosh Medical college, Ghaziabad,’ SBS Tyagi, DCP (New Delhi), said.
The placement agency owner, Dev Kumar, who had employed both Meena and Rakhi at the MP’s flat, is still absconding. His cell phone number has been put under electronic surveillance to trace his exact location, police said.
The police is also trying to ascertain if Kumar is the same person who was arrested in 2011 for running a fake agency. A team of police officers has also been sent to Varanasi to confirm whether the third help Rampal employed by Dhananjay is a minor or not.
